McKinney Takes Office as Kansas State Treasurer

Emphasizing the importance of working with Kansas leaders to strengthen the state’s economy, increase good-paying jobs for hard working Kansans, and to encourage fiscal responsibility, Dennis McKinney took office today as the Kansas State Treasurer. As administrator of the state’s Learning Quest 529 Education Savings program, McKinney believes that it is important that Kansas families have access to an affordable education following high school. "Whether saving for technical education, or for university education, Learning Quest can help hard working Kansans save taxes today while investing in their children’s education,” said McKinney. “In today's job market, 60 percent of jobs require at least some education beyond high school while another 20 percent require at least a four year degree. If you want to work, save and invest, we want to help you and your family get ahead." Prior to assuming the office of State Treasurer, McKinney represented the 116th House District of Kansas, which includes Barber, Comanche, Kingman, Kiowa, North Harper, and Southeast Ford counties. He was appointed to the Kansas House of Representatives in May of 1992 and was successfully re-elected for eight terms. McKinney served as Kansas House Minority Leader from 2003 through 2008. In his leadership role at the Capitol, McKinney served on the State Finance Council, and the Legislative Coordinating Council. He previously served on House committees focusing on transportation, energy and environmental issues. Prior to serving in the state legislature, McKinney served as a Kiowa County Commissioner from January 1989 through May 1992. He is a farmer and a stockman in Kiowa and Comanche counties. A lifelong Kansan, McKinney resides in Greensburg with his wife Jean and their daughters Kelly and Lindy. Kelly is currently attending Kansas State University while Lindy attends Greensburg High School. McKinney holds a bachelor's degree in political science and a master's degree in public finance and administration, both from Wichita State University.
