Independence Day

Independence Day

As we gather with loved ones, neighbors and friends to celebrate our nation’s birthday, we are reminded of the soldiers who fight for our freedom. It is because of them, and the soldiers before them, that we are here to celebrate our Independence Day.

We must also remember our forefathers and those who joined them in the fight for life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. If it were not for their service and sacrifice, we may not be here today.

Throughout the United States of America today, there are many challenges facing families, but on this day, our Independence Day, I hope each of us can take time to celebrate our nation’s birthday, be thankful for our freedom and the opportunities we’re given.

We pray for those who are separated from loved ones, especially those serving our country overseas in Iraq and Afghanistan. The sacrifice these brave soldiers and their families make is one that at the very least is quality time away from loved ones, and at its greatest, a lifetime.

To all Kansans, I wish you a happy, safe and momentous Independence Day! I join with all of you in a hope that by next Independence Day our soldiers are safely home, and our world is a safer place.
