Retiring Republican Legislator Endorses Democrat Running for his District

Rep. Ray Cox, Quentin Brewer announce support of 39th District Candidate Corey Mohn

SHAWNEE, Kan. - Retiring State Representative Ray Cox, R-Bonner Springs, and former candidate Quentin Brewer both formally endorsed Corey Mohn of Shawnee, today as their choice for State Representative in the 39th House District.

The two leading Wyandotte County Republicans announced their endorsement of Mohn, a Shawnee Democrat, in written statements (attached).

Rep. Cox said that he had not taken the decision to endorse a Democratic running for his seat lightly, but that Mohn,s moderate leadership style was more in tune with the values of Northeast Kansas than his Republican opponent.

"Our district has a proud tradition of electing moderate candidates that look beyond party labels to solve problems and do what is right for the people of the district. I believe Corey Mohn offers the voters of the 39th District a real choice to continue moderate leadership," said Rep. Cox.

"I urge all of the voters of our district - Republicans, Democrats, and Independents - to give Corey serious consideration. If you do, you will see a future representative we can be proud of."

Rep. Cox will be retiring from his position as 39th District State Representative after serving in the Kansas Legislature for 14 years. Mohn received Cox,s only general election endorsement for the open district seat.

Quentin Brewer, the moderate Republican candidate who lost the primary election for the 39th District, also chose to endorse Mohn over his Republican opponent in the General Election. Brewer said that he admired Mohn,s work ethic and ability to represent the interests of all community members, regardless of party affiliation.

"Corey is in touch with the issues people in our community face on a daily basis," Brewer said. "As a business owner, as well as a resident, I know Corey will always be available to hear my concerns and help solve any problems I face. Voters that give Corey a chance to represent us will not be disappointed."

The 39th House District includes all of Bonner Springs and parts of west and northwest Shawnee.

The following is a statement from retiring Republican Representative Ray Cox:

"I have had the honor of serving as Kansas State Representative for the 39th District for the past 14 years. In that time, I have worked to ensure that my constituents had a friend and voice in Topeka. Our district has a proud tradition of electing moderate candidates that look beyond party labels to solve problems and do what is right for the people of the district. I believe Corey Mohn offers the voters of the 39th District a real choice to continue moderate leadership.

"I am a lifelong Republican and , frankly, did not make this decision lightly. However, after meeting with Corey and getting to now him as a person and candidate, I know he will run a respectable, positive campaign. If elected, he will serve the people of the 39th District admirably and include all parties in decision-making. "Corey will be a real asset to our community. I urge all of the voters of our district - Republicans, Democrats, and Independents - to give Corey serious consideration. If you do, you will see a future representative we can be proud of."

The following is a statement from Republican Primary Candidate Quentin Brewer:

"I am supporting Corey Mohn for State Representative in the 39th District. I have always believed that a candidate,s work during a campaign is a real indicator of how hard the individual will work as our representative. Corey is an extremely hard worker and has shown his tireless work ethic on the campaign trail, meeting with community leaders, taking his message of open-mindedness and cooperation into the neighborhoods of our district, and listening to the concerns of residents.

"Though Corey is a Democrat and I am a Republican, I feel Corey better represents my interests than his Republican opponent. Corey is in touch with the issues people in our community face on a daily basis. As a business owner, as well as a resident, I know Corey will always be available to hear my concerns and help solve any problems I face. Voters that give Corey a chance to represent us will not be disappointed."
