Elliot has acquired many valuable skills through his work and educational experiences that make him the best candidate to work for the people of the 14th district. Elliot attended the University of Northern Iowa where he majored in Public Administration with emphases on economics and finance. During college, he worked as an intern for the United States Department of Agriculture’s Rural Development Agency where he worked with rural communities and non-profit organizations toward strengthening the infrastructure of rural America.
Currently, Elliot works as a Planner for the City of Merriam’s Community Development Department. As a Planner, Elliot works directly with developers, local businesses and residents to aid in the facilitation of both new development and the revitalization of existing development. Because the City of Merriam is a smaller community, Elliot has also been able to branch out beyond the standard duties of a City Planner.
One of the most rewarding aspects of Elliot’s duties includes the work he does with other area governments and organizations. Elliot works with organizations like the MidAmerican Regional Council, many of the Metro-area cities and Johnson County in efforts to make our communities a better place.
“Working for a smaller city affords me the ability to wear many hats and learn many different skills. I have built strong working relationships with employees, elected officials and community leaders from every corner of Johnson County and I look forward to utilizing the skills and relationships that I have built when I get to Topeka.”
In addition, Elliot works heavily with the City’s community outreach programs. He understands that it is the job of government to communicate with the public and make government as open and accessible as possible. Along these lines, Elliot attends public meetings, neighborhood meetings and one-on-one meetings with residents in an effort to provide them with the best service possible. Elliot looks forward to taking this belief to Topeka where he hopes that it will catch on.
Elliot and his beautiful wife Jennifer were married in 2006 while both were attending the University of Northern Iowa. On August 4th, 2009 they welcomed their first child into this world, Hunter James Lahn. With the addition of Hunter to the Lahn family, Elliot's desire to create true long-term fixes for the issues facing Kansas grows stronger each day. Elliot and Jennifer look forward to having an opportunity to serve the people of the 14th district."
